Dental autoclaves: differences between type B and S

At present there are different models and types of dental autoclaves, classified by the type of instruments to be sterilized: in B and S. These equipments allow sterilization by means of steam at high pressure and temperature, which is why it is an indispensable device in dental clinics, since through them the sterilization of dental instruments is achieved.

This instrument is composed of a thick-walled metal container and hermetic closure, which allows high pressure sterilization to be carried out, ensuring maximum disinfection of all dental materials.

The main function of a dental autoclave is to eliminate the microorganisms and spores present in dental instruments, coagulating their proteins and thus avoiding the spread of any type of infection, and thus guaranteeing that all the material used in these clinics is sterile. Dental autoclaves are used for the daily cleaning of utensils used by dentists, such as tweezers or explorers.

Class S autoclaves

It is an intermediate class between the N and B autoclaves. This type of equipment carries out a more complete sterilization process than the N class autoclaves, but they are not very effective in the sterilization of textile materials. They allow the sterilization of single-layer instruments, multilayer packaging and instruments that cannot be sterilized in N autoclaves. For this reason, they are not suggested in the hygiene of all utensils used in dental clinics.

They generally have a vacuum pump that allows the air to be completely removed from the chamber before starting the sterilization process. But it uses a single stage pre-vacuum, less effective than the vacuum used in B autoclaves.

Class B autoclaves

These types of autoclaves are the most suitable and recommended for sterilizing any type of dental instrument: packaged materials, textiles, utensils with cannulas and holes or porous loads. Class B autoclaves are the most suggested for dental clinics, according to international regulation standards, because they comply with all sanitary and epidemiological requirements.

These equipments allow to sterilize all types of batches, including complex batches. It has a fractionated pre-vacuum that allows the air to be completely eliminated from the chamber, which makes the sterilization of all types of tools and materials more efficient.
