How is Hydrogen Sulfide Detected with the Ion Meter?

Ion meters are equipment designed to measure and control the purity of water, they are also used for multiple projects and in many planes; as it is in mining, livestock, laboratory, agriculture, arts, agri-food industry, drinking and wastewater, among many others.

In this case, for the detection of hydrogen sulfide it is often present in groundwater and sediments, and sometimes found in industrial or municipal wastewater. Sulfide is produced by the decomposition of organic matter and reduction of sulfate by bacteria. Therefore, the incorporation of equipment capable of measuring the quality of consumable and non-consumable water is valuable. Since pure water is required for many laboratory and hospital procedures.

Also, the ion meter allows calculation in limited spaces, then can be stored in a carrying case when not in use.

Determination of Hydrogen Sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a mineral acid formed by the mixture and dissociation of hydrogen sulfide in water. It is called hydrogen sulfide when it is dissolved in water, and in a gaseous state it is known as hydrogen sulfide. It usually results from anaerobic decomposition of organic debris. Solutions for sulfide measurement include calibration and measurement of ion meters. Other solutions include the sulfide antioxidant standard, being a two-component solution and used to prepare sulfide standards from unhydrated sodium sulfide.

Thus, determination of water concentrations has become more frequent, because it plays a key role in controlling the bioavailability of toxic metals in sediments, and ion meters include two channel options in which a pH probe can be connected to one channel and the sulfide ion to the other. These have the ion charge and weight formula programmed for use and comply with methods including known sum, known subtraction, addition of analyte and analyte subtraction methods.

Therefore, to calculate the sulfide concentration almost without interruption, a quick and economical measurement of sulfide can be performed using an ion selective electrode.

Advantages of the Ion Meter

Generally, sulfate may be present in water as a by-product of oil refineries; industrial discharges from pulp and paper mills, textiles, chemical industries, gas transformation routines and laundry facilities as a result of the use of detergents.

The determination of hydrogen sulfate is very important for geochemical and environmental analyzes, and various techniques have been used to do so such as gravimetry, turbidimetry, Laser Raman spectroscopy, ion chromatography and atomic absorption.

By using the ion meters, it presents some advantages over the ones mentioned above; such as:

  • The speed and simplicity of overall analysis
  • Samples do not need complex pre-treatment
  • It requires tools available in most Labs and is relatively inexpensive.

All these advantages point towards the possibility of using selective electrodes for the determination of hydrogen sulfate, as an alternative analysis method to the existing ones. It is a general purpose, laboratory or field equipment that provides an affordable and low maintenance sulfur analysis benefit for many water applications.
