Refractometer

Refraction is the change in the velocity of a light wave that hits a surface as it passes from one medium to another with a different refractive index. The refractive index is the ratio between the speed of light in vacuum and the speed of light in another substance, is a physical property characteristic of each species (solid, liquid or gaseous) that is characterized by the propagation of light in a given medium. This parameter of analysis is a good approximation for media where losses by absorption or other phenomena are negligible.

The measuring instrument associated with this parameter is called a refractometer. Its operation is based on measuring the amount of curvature of light passing through the sample. The formula behind the phenomenon is Snell’s law, which is often used to describe the relationship between angles of incidence and light.

Types of Refractometer your Laboratory may need

Digital Refractometer

Digital refractometers are essential tools in the laboratory for measuring the refractive index of substances with precision and ease. Compared to traditional analog refractometers, digital refractometers offer greater accuracy and faster results, making them ideal for a wide range of applications in research, quality control, and production processes. With their user-friendly digital interface, these instruments provide reliable readings that can be easily recorded and transferred for further analysis.

In Kalstein’s lineup of digital refractometers, users can find a variety of models designed to meet different needs and budgets. From basic handheld devices to advanced benchtop units, each digital refractometer boasts high-quality optics and intuitive controls for seamless operation. Whether measuring the concentration of liquids in food and beverage production or determining the purity of chemicals in pharmaceutical labs, Kalstein’s digital refractometers deliver consistent and accurate results to support efficient and reliable laboratory workflows.

Optical Refractometer

Optical refractometers are precise instruments commonly used in laboratory settings to measure the refractive index of various substances. These devices work based on the principle of Snell’s Law, where the change in the direction of light passing through a substance is analyzed to determine its refractive index. The Optical Refractometers available in the market offer high accuracy and reliability, making them essential for applications in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and research laboratories.

One particular subtype under the category of Optical Refractometers is known for its advanced features and user-friendly design. These Optical Refractometers offer quick and accurate measurements of refractive indices, making them ideal for routine lab work and quality control processes. With their compact size and easy-to-use interface, these Optical Refractometers are a valuable asset for any modern laboratory looking to enhance efficiency and productivity.

How is Food Analyzed with the Refractometer?

The refractometer is an instrument that is used in laboratories to obtain sugar levels, sodium chloride, degrees Brix expressed in percentage (%), fructose, glucose in syrups, oils, juices, among others. This new equipment calculates the refractive index of light passing through the sample and correlates the values in scales, demonstrating that a certain amount dissolves in it, and converts it to dense, and its optical properties are altered, all this corresponds to the speed at which light passes through the substances and determines how much is refracted or bent.
