Heating mantle

The heating blanket is equipment used in laboratories to heat in a stable and uniform way, samples and substances in glass containers with a round base such as volumetric balloons.

This equipment has the ability to heat substances in a graduated manner, thanks to the fact that it has controls that allow the user to set the desired temperature, required by the procedure to be carried out by the user.

How does the heating mantle work?

The substance to be processed must be introduced into a distillation or volumetric flask. The blanket heats up slowly, which is why it can become warm during installation. The mantle produces heat energy as it converts voltage (electrical energy) into heat. So, the blanket is placed around the balloon, and it is checked that it is in contact with the surface to be heated, thus heating the substance in the flask. The temperature regulator is connected. At the end of the heating, the cover is removed. In the same way the heating blanket also cools down slowly.

Components of a heating blanket

  • Painted steel exterior.
  • Heating elements: they are distributed throughout the fabric to heat up quickly and reduce consumption.
  • Switch: This is what makes temperature control possible.
  • Indicator light: it is the light that alerts the state of the blanket, dictates whether it is off or on.
  • Indicator lamp: indicates when the blanket is operating and when it is not.
  • Grounding: in the event of an insulation fault while the equipment is in operation or while it is connected to the electrical source, this is the system used for protection.

Precautions to be taken when using the heating blanket

  • Use a current transformer to connect the equipment to the power source. The heating blanket should never be plugged directly into a wall socket
  • Check the equipment for holes, scratches or damage before using it.
  • Check the voltage: it must be adequate for the equipment, since it works with a specific voltage. If not, high voltage risks overheating, melting the fiberglass insulation and exposing the element to the heater directly. However, if the voltage is lower than required, the heating will not be efficient.
  • Do not use the equipment in humid areas. It must be a dry environment.
  • Do not allow the substance to be heated to come into contact with the blanket.
  • It cannot be gasoline, or some other flammable substance that will heat up. Heating such elements would cause fire or explosion.
  • The equipment must be disconnected for cleaning or maintenance.
