The laminar flow hoods are equipment created to maintain absolute control of the environment within the laboratory, when subjected to specific treatments of the air, allowing to create areas with strict control of suspended particles, and in this way, avoid any contamination both internal and external.
These work in medical research laboratories or microbiology, sampling, weighing areas; although they are also used in many scientific processes, from in vitro fertilization, to the performance of clinical analyzes or tissue culture. It is a key part of every laboratory, responsible for providing the user with safety and protection, creating air barriers, allowing it to flow at a constant speed in a single direction, thus eliminating turbulence, something also known as laminar air flow.
Types and Differences between Vertical and Horizontal Laminar Flow Cabinets
These cameras are differentiated by their physical structure, but not by their function, since both are responsible for protecting the operator, avoiding environmental contamination within the laboratory spaces and protecting biological material. The laminar flow chambers are vertical and horizontal, in which they have filters at the top of which are vertical, and in the horizontal is in the rear.
In the horizontal laminar flow cabinets, the filtered air comes from the back of the enclosure, passes through the main chamber, in a horizontal unidirectional current and is expelled by the front opening.
On the other hand, in the vertical laminar flow cabinets, clean air comes from the ceiling, and the filter passes through the main enclosure chamber, with a unidirectional current toward the ground. Subsequently, it is expelled by the front opening of the same.
On the other hand, in flow hoods, there is a decrease in the level of turbulence compared to vertical flow cabinets, because the air flow does not hit the surface. However, vertical flow cabinets create less turbulence around large pieces of equipment, compared to horizontal flow cabinets.
Maintenance of Laminar Flow hoods
To obtain efficient results, regarding the safety offered by laminar flow hoods and in conjunction with the health of the operator, there are certain maintenance procedures, including this one:
- Keep electronic card, wiring, keyboard and motor fan in optimal conditions.
- U.V. lamps should be carefully checked.
- Lubrication and tuning of the general mechanical system of the equipment.
- Cleaning and disinfecting work area surface.
- External and internal integral cleaning of the equipment.
- Sealing check.
- Performance check.
Therefore, it is necessary to maintain and control equipment installations, for the safety of the operator, the environment and the materials, so that the final result allows them to continue working properly throughout their useful life.
