Horizontal laminar flow hoods and assisted reproduction

A horizontal laminar flow hood is laboratory equipment that is used with the main objective of obtaining a pollution-free environment, since it provides a sterile and safe area within the laboratory, being able to perform any activity that is required safely, including assisted reproduction procedures.

These laminar flow hoods are characterized by having a HEPA filter located at the back of the hood, so that the unidirectional airflow moves through horizontal parallel lines, i.e. from the back of the equipment to the operator.

How do laminar flow hoods work?

The principle of operation of horizontal laminar flow hoods is based on the fact that when all air entering the work area is filtered through HEPA filters, a unidirectional flow occurs because the air moves through the work area with a uniform speed along parallel lines achieving a sweep or removal of particles present in it. Air filtration is obtained by means of a built-in HEPA filter, which filters 99.97% of particles greater than or equal to 0.3 micrometers.

Despite the characteristics of this type of equipment, it should not be used to work with dangerous products, for example, certain antibiotics and chemotherapy, or any type of pathogenic sample such as viruses, since during handling aerosols can be generated that the airflow will lead to the operator.

What is assisted reproduction?

Assisted reproduction is defined as the set of medical techniques and treatments that facilitate pregnancy when it is not achieved naturally. Among the main fertility treatments that currently exist are artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, which can be combined with techniques such as gamete donation or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (currently known as preimplantation genetic test, PGT), among others.

Currently, assisted reproduction techniques performed in different laboratories must comply with a series of safety standards and follow strict working protocols. All this is complemented by an appropriate distribution (physical space) of the tasks carried out in the laboratory and the use of appropriate equipment that allows the manipulation of gametes and / or embryos.

Horizontal laminar flow hoods and assisted reproduction

To achieve the best results, it is necessary to have the best laboratory equipment for assisted reproduction techniques. Therefore, it is recommended to have a horizontal laminar flow hood that provides a controlled atmosphere for the recovery of eggs in the operating room. The egg is a material that is considered extremely delicate so the minimal environmental variation during its handling can affect its quality, which in turn would lead to loss of embryonic quality.

Therefore, during its recovery and handling it is essential that stable temperature, pH and humidity conditions are maintained in order to avoid a possible deterioration of gametes that would decrease the chances of pregnancy. Horizontal laminar flow hoods are responsible for keeping all these parameters within the desired limits during these critical moments during the development of IVF treatments.  Avoiding cross-contamination that could cause loss of samples and as a result loss of time and economic resources.
