What is patient monitoring like in intensive care?

The monitoring of vital parameters is a factor of great importance in the strict evaluation of the clinical status of the patient in the intensive care units, this is achieved through medical equipment such as the patient monitor, which allows the detection, processing and continuous deployment of complex physiological parameters of the patient.

There are several types of patient monitors that will show us the digital value of each particular parameter, and depending on their configuration, they can measure and display more than 20 different types of parameters, coming from sensors and devices that are placed on the patient.

What is an intensive care unit?

They are clinical spaces in which a thorough and very strict surveillance of patients with life-threatening conditions is carried out. These places have the necessary equipment and qualified staff to attend this type of patients, since in these places through observation and continuous recording of physiological parameters the current state of the patient is assessed, as well as its evolution and the therapeutic impact on its hemodynamics. Importantly, all patients in the ICU need vital sign monitoring.

These vital signs are those parameters that indicate the hemodynamic status of the patient. Heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and peripheral body temperature are considered as the main vital parameters.

What is the function of a patient monitor for intensive care?

These devices are essential devices in every intensive care unit to detect, visualize and store all vital signs of the patient. If any of them are below or above normal for the patient’s age, or if any other adverse activity occurs, an alarm is triggered to alert doctors. These alarms are visual and sound, although they can easily be silenced if the problem that has generated them is being addressed.

Patient monitors are especially useful in patients undergoing anesthesia, medications, or any other treatment that determines the need for blood, variation in medication, or volume replacement, such as a plasma expander.

Optimal criteria to be met by patient monitors in the ICU

  • Easy to set up: they must be easy to connect to the patient, they must have quick access to the basic functions of the equipment.
  • Easy to operate: they must have quick access to parameter change during monitoring, as well as show trends show arrhythmias and record on paper if desired.
  • Easy to learn basic and operational functions.
  • They must have a simple design that allows the parameters to be displayed correctly on the screen, as well as curves and numerical data.
  • The size of the monitor should be commensurate with the area to be used.
